Write Motivation - Week 1 Check In

(If you're looking for my Writers's Voice Entry, its here.)

So one of my writing goals for this month was to finish the rough draft of my WIP, which I started on April 29th, so I started just in time to hop on board for write motivation for May. Last night I finished the first draft, and although I love being deep in the writing process, I also love when it's finished and I know I have something from start to end. Being a fast drafter is great, but my brain is of course going "lol look at this mess you have to fix." Ah editing. I think for now I'll just do a first read through, which is actually my favorite part of the editing process since it's the first time I'm reading the novel from start to finish and I don't do more than light editing. After that I'll put it aside so I can concentrate on my other write motivation goals this month, which includes sending out more queries for the novel I currently have on submission, and doing more editing on other projects. In total I have four novels on my hands to work with, one that's on submission and three in the editing phase, so I have my hands full. I actually didn't want to write another book until I had worked through the three I had, but you can't exactly tell your brain 'no' when it's trying to get a story outta you. At least I'll be busy, and hopefully I'll stay motivated. There are some days when you just don't want to touch the keyboard you know?

So that's about where I'm at this first week into write motivation for May. I've been enjoying all the cheers and encouragement from everyone else; it's great to be part of a supportive writing community. Hope you all are hitting your goals!

    1. I don't know if there are tips for this, I've sort of just gradually become a fast writer! For me it's all about the right idea taking hold, I have a list of potential book ideas but until one really starts working itself out in my head I can't write. While I'm writing I tend to already have mapped out a lot of plot points to hit, I make notes as I go, and I'm able to get through a few scenes at a time. The ideas definitely aren't all formed, I sometimes introduce characters and plot points I have no idea what to do with at first, but they always work themselves in later. Sometimes I even have to go back and add scenes. I think just having an idea of further scenes and developments will help, even if they aren't all cohesive at first.

  7. Oh, yeah, editing can drive one nuts for sure! I agree, after reading your own novel for the gazillioneth time it becomes blah. But it has to be done, right?

    1. It sure does, and I guess the feeling of accomplishment when you're finally done makes it worth it!
